Alan Gilbert

Alan Gilbert will become Music Director of the New York Philharmonic in the 2009–10 season. He was chief conductor and artistic advisor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra from January 2000 to June 2008, and principal guest conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Symphony Orchestra (NDRSO) since 2004. Highlights of his 2007–08 season included his debut with the Vienna Staatsoper, conducting Bizet’s Carmen; appearing with The Philadelphia Orchestra at its home at the Kimmel Center; taking the orchestra of his alma mater—Philadelphia’s Curtis Institute of Music—to Carnegie Hall; and concluding his final season in Stockholm. He regularly conducts other leading orchestras in the US and abroad, including the Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, and San Francisco symphony orchestras; The Cleveland Orchestra; Munich’s Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra; Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw; and Orchestre National de Lyon. In 2006 he also made an unscheduled debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. He was named the first music director of Santa Fe Opera in 2003, and has conducted at Los Angeles Opera as well as at the Zurich Opera. Born and raised in New York City, Mr. Gilbert studied at Harvard University, The Curtis Institute, and The Juilliard School; was a substitute violinist with The Philadelphia Orchestra for two seasons; and served as assistant conductor of The Cleveland Orchestra from 1995 to 1997. In fall 2008 he makes his Metropolitan Opera debut conducting John Adams’s Dr. Atomic.
