Luvenia A. George

Luvenia George is an ethnomusicologist and a music educator who has taught on all levels, including university. She is a former research scholar and program coordinator of the Duke Ellington Youth Project at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Howard University in Washington, DC, and master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Maryland. She is the author of Teaching the Music of Six Different Cultures, Second Edition (World Music Press, 1986), a pioneering work in world music education. A nationally known lecturer, presenter, and consultant, George has taught on all levels, from kindergarten through university. Her writings on African American music and music education pedagogy have appeared in scholarly journals and professional education literature. An independent scholar, George continues to research the music of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong, the piano rags of Eubie Blake, the songs of Lucie E. Campbell, and the incorporation of ethnomusicology in music education curricula and the public sector.
