Tracie Luck

Tracie Luck has recently come to national attention in her New York City Opera debut as Margaret in Margaret Garner, a new opera by Grammy-winning composer Richard Danielpour and Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Laureate Toni Morrison. In addition, she sang the title role in workshops designed to musically hone and promote the new opera at Michigan Opera Theatre, the Opera Company of Philadelphia and Cincinnati Opera, as well as at the New York City Opera’s VOX: Showcasing American Opera Festival. She was also the mezzo soloist for the world premiere of “Triptych”(from Margaret Garner) with Maestro André Raphel Smith and the Wheeling Symphony. This season she returned to Michigan Opera Theatre in the title role of Margaret Garner in a co-production with the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University.

In April 2008, Ms. Luck made her Pacific Opera Victoria debut as Addie in the Canadian premiere of Mark Blitzstein's Regina. She has also delighted audiences as Maddalena in Rigoletto with Cincinnati Opera and Michigan Opera Theatre; Flora in La Traviata, Annie and Lily in Porgy and Bess, and Virginelle in La Périchole with the Opera Company of Philadelphia; Third Lady in The Magic Flute with Utah Festival Opera Company; and various roles in Rigoletto, Fricka and Grimgerde in Die Walküre, and Third Lady in The Magic Flute with Virginia Opera.

Ms. Luck earned her bachelor’s degree from Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, where she worked with Roger Brunyate, John Lehmeyer, JoAnne Kulesza, and Maestro Ed Polochick. She holds an artist diploma from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia where she met her current teacher, Joanna Levy. Ms. Luck continued her education as an apprentice artist with Santa Fe Opera, the Utah Festival Opera Company, Virginia Opera, and the Britten-Pears School in England where she studied lieder with Ruth Drucker and Elly Ameling. She has been the recipient of grants from the Sullivan Foundation, The Licia Albanese-Puccini Foundation, Astral Artistic Services, The Marian Anderson Historical Society, Opera North of Philadelphia, and the Rosa Ponselle Foundation.
